Christmas Stockings
In cooperation with St. Matthews Kiwanis Club and Youth Key Club Cloth-A-Child Outreach, Louisville Chapter ASG members make Christmas stockings and pencil bags for needy elementary-aged children. The Kiwanis Club raise money to purchase clothing, underwear, and socks for the children. The Key Club provides school supplies to go inside the stockings and Louisville ASG members donate money for small toys and books. Louisville ASG members made 130 stockings and 40 pencil bags in 2008 and in 2009 they made 182 stockings and 100 pencil bags. The stockings have to be large enough to hold a pencil box and paper (width of top of stocking measures about 9” across and depth of stocking is about 18”). Special patterns have been designed to meet these requirements. Patterns can be obtained from Linda Bowles or Pat Kinney. The fabric requirements for the stocking are a 38” by 15” piece of Christmas fabric, a 38” by 15” piece of lining, a 38” by 15” piece of lightweight batting for the stocking body and a 18” by 8” piece of fabric is needed for the cuff. The stocking body can be pieced with embroidery stitchouts, patchwork squares, etc. and trimming can be added to the cuff.
